The effective teaching of Science in the 21st Century is important if our students are to have an informed opinion on the challenges that will face them in the future. We live in an increasingly technological society and the advances in Science pose sociological, cultural and moral dilemmas.

To this end, the department will strive to ensure that all students have access to a curriculum that is both enjoyable and challenging. Positive achievement for all can only be attained by adapting our teaching styles to the learning styles of the students in our laboratories and classrooms.

Our Objectives - Delivering the vision

Students should:

  • develop curiosity and the confidence to enquire
  • understand the procedures of scientific enquiry
  • understand scientific explanations
  • make informed decisions about personal lifestyles
  • understand and evaluate media reports of science in society
  • hold personal viewpoints on scientific issues
  • pursue further interests or a career in science

The examination success of the Science Department has improved dramatically over the past 3 years. More than 63% of our students achieved an A*-C pass rate this year, while all students achieved an A-G pass. Similarly, more than 72% of students achieved Level 5 and above in their National Curriculum Tests.

The Department has recently invested in several interactive CDROMS that are networked in the IT suites, and these have proved to be very popular with those students that have used them.

We also have a newly refurbished laboratory and it is our intention to renew another lab next year.
