The Curriculum
During Key Stage Three, pupils develop skills in Listening, Performing and Composing. They work in groups, as a whole class and individually.
Pupils are given the option to take Music at GCSE level, where these three key skills are further developed through a variety of topics, ranging from Classical and World Music traditions through to Dance Club Remix.
In Year 9, all students participate in a cross-curricular project, culminating in a Creative Arts Evening.
Extra Curricular Activities
Specialist teachers of Piano, Keyboard, woodwind, brass and upper strings support the department, teaching instrumental pupils on a rota system.
Each term, different musical groups meet as part of the Out of Hours Learning Programme. These are currently Jazz Group and Key Stage 3 choir.
Some of the extra-curricular activity focuses on preparing students for the school production. Past performances include 'Grease', 'Dames at Sea' and 'Little Shop of Horrors'. More recently, 'The Tempest' (Easter 2004) featured original music composed by members of the cast and year 9 pupils and 'Romeo and Juliet' (Dec 2004) featured a 60's style pop group.
In July, GCSE Music students participated in 'An Evening of Music and Poetry', and in December Yeaar 11 GCSE Music students attended Kings College Christmas Carol Concert.
