The MFL Department is committed to:
Creating an active learning environment, including the use of ICT
- Making language learning relevant through trips and other activities
- Helping students become citizens of Europe by developing their cultural awareness
Organisation
At WVC all students learn French in Y7 for 1 period a week. At Christmas the students are set according to ability and two groups of able linguists begin to study German for one period every 3 weeks. This system continues through Years 8 and 9. In Y10 students continue with French or German or both languages. There are 3 periods for each language every fortnight. Students learn French with the Expo course, which encourages active learning, including lots of speaking. German is taught using Logo .
Trips and activities
We offer a variety of trips to cater for all year groups.
- There is a day trip to Parc Astérix near Paris for Y7 students
- There is an exchange visit to Haßloch in Germany for students in Y8-10
- There is a visit to the Europa Centre in Essex for Y11
We also run a French club after school and our focus for this term is to organise and perform an end of term pantomime ( Le petit chaperon rouge ).
Other initiatives
We are establishing a contact with a school in France with a view to starting an e-mail exchange.
