History

History, with its emphasis on people (their ideas, actions and motivation) and skills in using evidence, makes a significant contribution to the achievement of the college aims. The department aims to motivate students in an environment where high quality learning is supported by good resources and challenging targets, both extending and supporting the educational needs of all students.
There are two adjacent History teaching rooms, which are well equipped with video and audio resources. All students have access to modern text-books and they are actively encouraged to take full advantage of the ICT resources available in the college.
The department is keen to involve students, and their parents, in historical study. We now run a successful annual visit to the First World War battlefields at Ypres, in Belgium, for Year 9 students. In May 2002 a trip for parents was arranged as a result of the high level of interest shown. A Year 10 visit to the Imperial War Museum and the Holocaust Exhibition is planned for early in 2003.
An increasing number of students are opting for History as a GCSE course.
Over the last two years 60% of students taking GCSE have achieved an A* - C grade.
