Geography is the integrated study of the earth's landscapes, peoples, places and environments.
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3, all students study Geography for two periods per 11 day cycle. Students use modern textbooks, published by Oxford University Press. These are entitled Geog.1 (Year 7), Geog.2 (Year 8) and Geog.3 (Year 9). There is also a course website at www.oup.co.uk/oxed/secondary/geog.123/ with extra material, useful hotlinks and quizzes.
The topics covered at Key Stage 3 are as follows:
Year 7 – Plate tectonics, Map work, Settlement, Rivers
Year 8 – Energy, Coasts, Ecosystems, Weather and Climate
Year 9 – Development, France, Globalisation, Tourism
Key Stage 4
Geography is a very popular GCSE subject at Witchford. In both Years 10 and 11, students have three periods per 11 day cycle. We follow the OCR Geography C Specification, commonly known as the Bristol Project (Specification Code 1988).
The themes covered during the course are as follows:
Natural Hazards and People, Economic Systems and Development, Population and Settlement, Physical Systems and Environments, Using Practical Skills.
The course is assessed in three ways:
1. Final Examination at Foundation or Higher Tier. 50%
2. Decision Making Exercise (DME) at Foundation or Higher Tier. 30%
3. Coursework Investigation. One study on any part of the course. 20%
TOTAL 100%
This is a modular course which permits staged assessment. Students may
re-sit the DME in which assessments can take place in either January or June. The better score will be put towards the final grade awarded. We use an OCR endorsed textbook to accompany the course, entitled “People, places and themes” 2nd Edition, which is published by Heinemann. There is also a recommended revision guide to accompany the course, entitled “Revise for Geography GCSE OCR Specification C, which is also published by Heinemann.
